Prepare for your donation
Getting ready for your blood donation is simple, and a little preparation can make a big difference. These steps help ensure a smooth, comfortable experience and support a successful donation.
Schedule your appointment
Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water in the 24 hours leading up to your donation. Being well hydrated helps maintain healthy blood flow and may reduce the chance of feeling lightheaded.
Eat a healthy, iron-rich meal
Don’t donate on an empty stomach! Skipping meals can increase the chance of dizziness or fatigue.
Enjoy a balanced meal one to two hours before donating.
Iron-rich foods help support healthy hemoglobin levels. Great options include:
- Lean meats like beef or chicken
- Leafy greens such as spinach or kale
- Beans, lentils, or tofu
- Fortified cereals or whole grains
Pair iron-rich foods with vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, to help your body absorb iron more effectively. Avoid highly caffeinated beverages like coffee/tea, soda and energy drinks, as they can act as iron blockers.
