Therapeutic Phlebotomy

swoosh background

Therapeutic phlebotomy is a medical blood draw performed to help reduce blood volume, red blood cell mass, or excess iron levels in the body. These procedures are ordered by a physician as part of a treatment plan for certain medical conditions.

As a nonprofit blood center dedicated primarily to collecting and providing blood for patient transfusions, we also support patients who require therapeutic phlebotomy when prescribed by a healthcare provider. These services are performed by trained professionals using the same safety and quality standards applied to all blood collection procedures.

Who May Need Therapeutic Phlebotomy

Therapeutic phlebotomy may be prescribed for individuals with specific blood-related conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH)
  • Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT)
  • Polycythemia Vera
  • Secondary Polycythemia
  • Other physician-diagnosed blood disorders

Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH)

Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic condition that causes the body to absorb and store too much iron. Regular blood removal, called therapeutic phlebotomy, is a safe and effective treatment to reduce iron levels and protect long-term health.

Central California Blood Center provides therapeutic phlebotomy at no cost for individuals with HH.

In many cases, blood collected during therapeutic phlebotomy may be used to help hospital patients, provided it meets standard donor eligibility and regulatory requirements. This allows your prescribed treatment to also support lifesaving transfusion needs in our community. Please note that not all therapeutic collections will qualify for transfusion use.

How to Get Started

If you have a physician’s order for therapeutic phlebotomy, or if you are a healthcare provider submitting an order on behalf of a patient, you can begin the process by completing the required order form. Once submitted, our team will review the information and follow up with next steps for scheduling or additional requirements.

Patients who require more frequent blood removal than the standard donor interval may also be eligible for therapeutic phlebotomy with appropriate medical documentation on file.
